In the past year, authorities in various emirates have updated the speed limits on key roads. It’s crucial to stay informed about these changes, especially when traveling on routes you haven’t used in a while. Ignoring these updates and driving at old speed limits can result in fines for exceeding the new speed limits.

Fines for Exceeding Speed Limits

Most radars on UAE roads provide some leeway for slight speed excesses, except in Abu Dhabi, which eliminated the grace speed limit in 2018. Here’s a breakdown of the fines based on how much you exceed the speed limit:

  • Exceeding by no more than 20 km/h: Dh300
  • Exceeding by no more than 30 km/h: Dh600
  • Exceeding by no more than 40 km/h: Dh700
  • Exceeding by no more than 50 km/h: Dh1,000
  • Exceeding by no more than 60 km/h: Dh1,500 (6 black points, 15-day vehicle retention)
  • Exceeding by more than 60 km/h: Dh2,000 (12 black points, 30-day vehicle retention)
  • Exceeding by more than 80 km/h: Dh3,000 (23 black points, 60-day vehicle retention)

Fines in Abu Dhabi

Since 2018, Abu Dhabi has enforced fines for any speed over the designated limit, without a grace allowance.

Fines for Driving Below the Minimum Speed Limit

Driving too slowly can also result in fines. Most UAE roads have both maximum and minimum speed limits to ensure traffic flow and safety. Violating the minimum speed limit can result in a Dh400 fine.
